Most of us, at some point in our working lives, have had the Sunday night fear where we start to think about the next working week with dread. Then Monday morning kicks in and we are already dreaming about the weekend.
For some people, that might not be the case. You might be fulfilled – perhaps even excited – with the work you are doing. You might have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, and you have a supportive manager and colleagues who encourage you to accomplish these goals. You might be happy with your work/life balance and feel you have plenty of time and energy for your personal/family life.
If you feel this is not the case, and are wondering if it’s time to change jobs, here are some of the common clues that you might be ready for a move:
- You want to pursue a passion or a new career path that aligns with your values and goals You have outgrown your current role and you are ready for new challenges. You already know the technologies, systems, clients and way of working at your current company and your learning curve has plateaued
- You feel that your opportunities to grow will be limited by the size or culture of your current organisation
- You want to grow and develop by working in a different environment – this could be an international relocation!
- You’re not paid fairly for your work or don’t receive any recognition for your achievements
- Your team is constantly understaffed and as a result you are overworked
- You dread going to work every day and feel stressed or bored most of the time
- You don’t get along with your boss, coworkers, or clients and feel like you don’t fit in the company culture
- You have different values, goals, or passions than your employer and don’t feel aligned with the company’s mission or vision
If any of these apply to you, it might be time to look for a new job that offers you more satisfaction, challenge, and opportunity. However, before you quit your current job, make sure you have a clear idea of what you want from your next one and how to find it.
Remember, changing jobs is not always a negative thing. Sometimes, it can be a positive and rewarding decision that can help you reach your full potential. By looking for a job that suits your needs, preferences, and aspirations, you can improve your happiness, productivity, and career prospects.
